Rush 212-232 Response

Interactive art is something that I find very unique, because it is something that has only emerged as a medium very recently. Other new mediums like digital illustration, 3D modeling, or even film, are based on another medium from the past, painting, sculpting, or acting. Interactive art also goes hand in hand with performance based art, in that both are usually experienced through first hand involvement, rather than viewing a product once it’s complete, like a painting or sculpture. Interactive art allows users to experience the art on a very personal level, and in a way, create their own experience based on the way they choose to interact with the piece.
One of the works that I found really interesting was Fantastic Prayers, in which users can click to reveal a seemingly endless collection of media. I found that this work was basically a representation of the internet itself, in which people might find themselves on a completely different sight than they had originally intended. Looking back at all of these examples of interactive art in the book, one trend that I notice is that many of them tend to reference or at least acknowledge the medium they exist in, namely the internet or the computer itself. I suppose this is inevitable considering that in order to interact with the pieces, it is necessary for you to interact with the computer. However, I do appreciate some of the works such as Childhood/Hot and Cold Wars that utilizes a completely unique way of interacting with the piece, and one that is directly related to the subject matter.

  1. I think you nailed it when you said that interactive art is effective because it allows for a personal experience. In the same way that many people learn through past experiences, I think that allowing the viewer to have a unique experience that is personal to them makes the art piece much more memorable.

  2. I really like how you highlighted the importance of interactive art through user experience. I totally agree that it's a unique form, because the viewer can chose how much they want to participate and how much they'll get out of the experience. Way to go!

  3. I like that you caught on to interactive art becoming more about the experience of creating with the user, rather than making it about just looking a piece already finished. I feel that if artist could make an effort to make more of these types of pieces, more people could find an interest and a desire for the craft.
