Code of Best Practices Response
This document was something I was really interested in reading as I went into it, copyright and fair use conversations are becoming more and more prevalent in our society, yet often the exact rules of what constitutes copyright infringement don’t always seem to be clear. Something I didn’t think about that was brought up in the document was about how nonprofessional video can be much more easily distributed nowadays, and as such there is more of a chance for these amateur videos to possibly have an affect on established businesses, making knowing these laws even more important. What I was surprised to read was that fair use does not necessarily have an explicit letter of law, but rather it is flexible and able to be changed to apply to different circumstances. I can definitely see how this is a good attribute, as art in particular is a very broad field, so applying one set law to regulate it would be very difficult. However, I also think it’s possible that this kind of system could l...
New Media in Art 36-57 Response
I was very impressed in this reading by the way some of the video/performance art predicts some of the high production performances we see today. For example Robert Whitman's Prune Flat , featuring performers interacting with filmed images, immediately brought into my mind some of the performances involving projections on shows like America's Got Talent where the performers sync their movements with the images on screen. It's incredible to think about how far we've come with regards to technology, yet the ideas have been around for years. For me this chapter examined the reduction of art to its simplest form. Just like minimalist painters in the 60's and 70's attempted to reduce their subjects to the simplest possible shapes and colors, the video and performance artists in this chapter reduced their works to the actual process of making the works. When I looked at and read about the pieces in this chapter, I have to admit, I found it hard to relate to or appr...
What I'm getting from these is the theme of conformity, or "join us or else." I think that the middle phrase draws out the most from that idea.
ReplyDeleteI like the last slogan the best. The middle phrase seems a bit long-winded, while the bottom and top ones get straight to the point. Depending on the visuals in the poster, I think the top one could work well too, but the last slogan has more of an emotional argument.
